Throughout the late 1990's Walt Disney productions were encouraging the individual empowerment of women. Walt Disney had strayed from the usual 'damsel in distress' story line and were now displaying their princesses as capable and intelligent women with the ability to break social boundaries and expectations (WordPress, 2012). Through the late 1990's women within Disney productions were no longer helplessly reliant on men and were now achieving happiness through their own personal achievement (Warner, 2014). Disney had also begun to renovate the physical appearance of their princesses. Disney heroines were now supporting a more muscular figure and no longer embodying a beauty ideal that is unachievable (Warner, 2014). Throughout the late 1990's Disney princesses had evolved into more racially and culturally diverse characters that tackled more mature and serious themes. Disney supported more independent, strong heroines and therefore exhibited more socially and politically correct content (Warner, 2014). Therefore, throughout the late 1990's, princesses within Walt Disney productions were being portrayed as strong and capable women, who no longer supported unattainable figures.
